e and she also loves her mother’s old family place Constance Estate. Little Annawants to find maternal strength that can support her from Francine and Hester, but it isa pity that she has never been able to be recognized by any of them. Francine ismerely a black servant, but she always accompanies and takes care of Anna. As ZhangFeng argues, it is indeed Francine who “provides Anna with the rituals that give herlife stability and connect her to the island and its people” (201). It explains whyHester’s condescending attitude towards Caribbean culture and Dominican accent andher racist attitude to the Creole society in Dominica receiveAnna’s refusal and disgust. Therefore, Hester’s hardheartedness contributes to Anna’s deep attachment toFrancine andAnna also becomes more receptive to black Caribbean culture.

CHAPTER TWOANNA’S ATTEMPT TO GAIN THE RIGHT POSITIONBETWEEN TWO CULTURES

2.1Anna’sAttempt to Cater to White British Imperialist Culture

Anna has struggled between two different cultures since she was a child, tryingto find her right position. Though Anna recognizes Afro-Caribbean culture more fromthe bottom of her heart, she also unconsciously wants to melt into White BritishCulture because of her English stepmother Hester’s long-time influence. In order toadapt to the surrounding social environment and survive in the English society afterwandering to England, Anna initially ignores English people’s contempt for her. Sheintends to cater to the English people around her to make herself recognized by theEnglish society. That is the reason why Anna keeps silent about the insultingnickname “Hottentot.”

When Anna works as a chorus girl, she remains chaste. She does not live withrich men like other chorus girls. These girls give her an horribly offensive nickname“Hottentot” in order to ridicule Anna’s purity. Although Anna knows the insultingmeaning of the nickname, she just laughs it off and only treats it as a joke among hercompanions. Even when Anna stays at Walter’s house, his servants also have acontempt and indifference to Anna in a subtle manner. “Sneering faintly, sneeringdiscreetly, as a servant would. Who’s this? Where on earth did he pick her up?” (43).Mrs. Dawes, who looks after Anna in daily life, looks down on Anna a little as well.“She was always like that—placid and speaking softly, but a bit as if she werewatching me sideways” (78). Due to the pouring rain before Anna’s last meeting withWalter, Mrs. Dawes sends Willie as far as the tube station to call for a taxi for Anna incase she will get wet. Willie is gone for a long time and Mrs. Dawes begins to clickher tongue and mutter, “The poor boy—out in the pouring rain. Some people give a ot of trouble” (82). The taxi comes and Anna is thinking sitting in the taxi : “I oughtto have given Willie a bob. I know Mrs Dawes was annoyed because I didn’t give hima bob. It was just that I didn’t think of it.

2.2Anna’s Resistance to the Dualistic Imperialist English Society

Although Anna first has an illusory English dream after she drifts into England, this dream is shattered in the face of cruel social reality. Anna also feels extremelydepressed and sad because of the invisible wall of the dualistic imperialist Englishsociety, and her life is once again in a difficul论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
