t situation because of Walter’s departure. The English society around the First World War is full of various dualistic socialrelations. As a wandering, helpless Caribbean Creole girl, Anna’s Creole blood, herclass and gender make her oppressed by the dualistic imperialist English society thatis represented by the exploitative colonial female Ethel and male Walter. Anna’sidentity crisis also results from the Self/Other binary opposition. As Zhang Fengremarks, “In a sense, Anna is both English and West Indian, but the social structureswould not risk recognizing and thereby legitimizing this duality” (Zhang 207).

Anna endures the oppression silently from the start, but gradually learns to resist it and make her own inner voice. Thus, she reestablishes her national self-esteem as aCaribbean Creole. After a series of blows, Anna also becomes more awake andstronger. Especially when Anna is repeatedly insulted and picked on by Ethel, shechooses to fight back with words and actions. It shows that her subjectivity hasbecome increasingly clear. And then Anna’s return of all of Walter’s letters to Vincentcompletely reveals her awakening Caribbean Creole soul.

CHAPTER THREEANNA’S RECONSTRUCTION OF HER CULTURALIDENTITYASA CARIBBEAN CREOLE

3.1 LittleAnna’s Awakening of Her Caribbean Cultural Identity

Hester’s forcible indoctrination that indirectly promotes little Anna’s awakeningof her Caribbean cultural identity. This is the reason why Anna wants herselfself-burned in the sun, because in Anna’s eyes, the destruction of the flesh can bringabout her rebirth of spirit. Hester’s explanation of menstruation makes Anna feel likeshe wants to die. It is not menstruation but the English culture’s view of it that makesAnna want to die. It also makes her full of fear and shame so that she wishes she hasdied. In Anna’s eyes being an English woman is a painful and terrible thing whichmeans that she has to make the boundaries clear between Francine and herself andtake the English side. However, Anna would rather die than fawn on the British likeHester. For another, Francine also begins to repel Anna because of their different racesand social attributes. Finally, Francine alienates Anna intentionally. Anna not onlyblames herself for Francine’s hard work but never wants to succumb to the colonialrulers so that Anna chooses to expose herself to the burning sun as a means ofself-punishment. Only in this way can she refuse to grow up into an English whitefemale like her stepmother Hester and also avoid being as senile as her father in thefuture. Because Anna knows once her growing process starts, it will not stop. A lonelyperson like Anna is between heaven and earth, progressing to the final ending inisolation. She has got to know the pain of becoming an English woman and theirbleak future.
