Conclusion

This thesis explores the alienated mother images in The Metamorphosis and Old Floating  Cloud,  specially  addressing  why  the  mothers  become  alienated  and  the significance of the representation of them. The mothers in both books, develop distorted personalities  that  contradict  the  ideal  mother  image  painted  in  western  and  eastern cultures that are constructed to be “great,” “obedient,” and “self-sacrificing.” Moreover, the relationship between the mothers and their children is also abnormal and alienated. The mother’s alienation in The Metamorphosis is manifested in her indifference and apathy towards her son, which is illustrated through her silence, body language, and tone.  Mrs.  Samsa’s  silence  indicates  her  acquiescence  to  the  fact  that  she  gradually abandons her son; the enlarged spatial distance between the mother and son, as well as Mrs. Samsa’s restless body language also serve as a testament that Mrs. Samsa would become indifferent to her son. In the end, Mrs. Samsa indirectly causes the death of Gregor. Under Kafka’s depiction, Mrs. Samsa’s attitude towards her son has undergone a  dynamic  change,  from  an  original  maternal  tenderness  to  a  final  ruthlessness. Disparate from the mother in The Metamorphosis, Can Xue depicts the alienated mother images  through  their  inner  nature.  Additionally,  Can  Xue  presents  the  mothers  of madness and evilness, which is demonstrated through their pathological personalities and  their  curses  on  children.  The  indifference  of  Mrs.  Samsa  and  the  madness  and evilness  of  Old  Kuang’s  and  Xu  Ruhua’s  mother,  deviate  from  the  traditional  ideal mother image in people’s minds. 

Using  Simon  Beauvoir's  theory  of  “other”  and  Fromm’s  theory  of  “alienation,” this  thesis  demonstrates  the  causes  for  the  alienated  mother  images  in  The Metamorphosis  and  Old  Floating  Cloud  from  the  perspective  of  influences  of  patriarchy and the crisis of modernity. First, the mothers in both books are victims and defenders of patriarchy. On the one hand, they have been marginalized and reduced to the Other in a patriarchal society.
