Conclusion

One special fact about Gilead is that its story took place in Iowa, the Midwest, where Robinson grew up and worked. Robinson‟s personal experience enables her to witness the great differences between the western rural culture and the eastern urban civilization in the United States for nearly half a century. She believes that the Midwest region is the foundation of the mainstream culture of the United States, and the mainstream cultural national identity in American history, such as racial equality, freedom and independence, pluralism, has been well preserved and developed with the Westward Movement. And they were well reflected in Gilead.

This thesis discusses from the perspective of emotions, using “emotion trigger”, “journey of quest” and then “achievement of the goal” as the narrative structure, which extracted from Professor Hogan‟s Affective Narrative theory. Complicated emotions are contained in Gilead that Robinson tells the story from the point view of an old male pastor, who is quite clear about the history of Gilead the town and the ups and downs of America from 1830s-1956, while still places his hope on the future generation. The goals of the three levels stated above all have something to do with happiness: individual dignity, interpersonal attachment and collective superiority. 

At the individual level, triggered by making a destitute girl pregnant and never admit his doing, Jack left his sweet home to exile and then started his journey of quest for the love of his life. Under the inhibitions they encountered from her family and the society, Jack admitted his failures and tried to take up responsibility, although it was not easy. He returned to his forgiving father and made efforts to talk to Ames who was clear about his ungraceful past yet never let them go. Being candid with Ames, he wanted to know that if he can change and be a better person when his son and black wife were away from him because of his own failures. Finally, Ames forgave him and took him as his own son genuinely. At last, Jack set out again carrying Ames‟ blessing and hope. Thus, Jack regained a spiritual sweet home.
