Introduction
Stream-of-consciousness, an artistry and technique, has been approved universally by literary critics all over the world, and is regarded as one of the main modernistic achievements in the 20th century. It is a main artistic medium that the author uses to delineate the inner world of his character, especially to present the inner thoughts which is difficult to grasp. Literati abroad and in have done and achieved a lot in the study of it.
However, in the study of stream-of-consciousness, critics usually ignored the features of the creation of stream-of-consciousness itself. Most of them turn the irrational states into rational states, try their best to put the vague and contradictory states in order, and try actively to explain clearly things which are unspeakable. Actually, this kind of analysis tends to turn stream-of-consciousness creation into well-organized creation with critics' rational thoughts. This deprives the stream-of-consciousness creation of its original features.
Stream-of-consciousness novel sets the characters’ consciousness flowing as independent incidents and makes it the main body of the novel. Techniques of this kind of novels are against those of traditional novels. The Mark on the Wall was written by Virginia Woolf in 1919. This novel is about the consciousness flowing of character’s guessings of what the mark is. In The Mark on the Wall, there was no plot, no surrounding and no ending, the author grasps only the character’s instantaneous feelings and meditation without any action, and then lead us into the character’s inner world. The protagonist of the novel is unknown. Supposing from the context of the novel it may be a woman or a wife. But that’s not important. What is really important is the inner thoughts aroused after seeing the mark on the wall. Therefore, in the author’s consciousness flowing, there are changeable slices of life,
history fragments, perplexed and illusory thoughts appeared successively, and “thoughts that threatens to excite or to pain.
The
thesis will set The Mark on the Wall for example to delineate the features of stream-of-consciousness in literary works. And it will be presented in three aspects: unique devices, unique structure and artistic charm of language in stream-of-consciousness novel.
1. Unique devices of stream-of-consciousness novel
Before making the explanation, let’s see what is meant by the stream-of-consciousness technique first.
The stream-of-consciousness technique attempts to represent the multifarious thoughts of a character as they flow through his or her mind without regard to logical argument or narrative sequence. (Humphrey, 1954:788)
To such stream-of-consciousness fiction, the author applies the continual images; and by using device like the interior monologue, the author as the narrator of objective facts disappears.
1.1 Interior monologue: record of the author’s inner reality
Interior monologue is one of the techniques used in the stream-of-consciousness works. It was first used extensively by Eolouard Dujardin in 1887 but it only became widely known with Joyce’s use of it in Ulysses (1922).
Interior monologue is one particular kind of stream-of -consciousness writing. Stream-of-consciousness writing aims to provide a textual equivalent to the imaged stream-of -consciousness in mind of a fictional character.
Writers wanted to display for readers’ inspection, in a way that is impossible in real life, their characters’ private inn
