CHAPTER ONEINTRODUCTION
1.1 Research topic
Over the decades, the notion of identity has been characterized as a person’s displayof his or her membership in some feature-rich categories (Antaki & Widdicombe,1998) and theorized at the interface of disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, and linguistics. As Fairclough (2000) argues, the construction of identity is involvedin every social practice. From the perspective of linguistics, current studies onlanguage and identity are affected heavily by insights from social constructivism, which highlights identity as a consistent and stable concept that is dynamicallyconstructed. This view “accepts that identities are never unified and, in late moderntimes, increasingly fragmented and fractured” (Hall, 2000, p. 17), which partiallyresults in the various approaches of identity construction in different contexts andsituations. Although there remains a large number of studies on identity constructionin different settings such as public speech (Johnstone, 1995), courtroom (Matoesian,2001), classroom interaction (Kasper, 2004; Keith, 2006), etc., few of them areproduced by non-native speakers (hereinafter NNS) of English, that is, English is usedas a ‘lingua franca’.
English as a lingua franca (hereinafter ELF) is one of the results of the globalspread of English, which has been conceptually interpreted and empiricallyinvestigated from different research frameworks. The creative and ad hoc use ofEnglish in multilingual settings indicates that ELF users can adapt their English tomeet their own communication needs. Research into ELF in business domain istermed as “BELF” (Louhiala-Salminen, 2005, p. 285) and is especially vibrant with a substantial number of these studies exhibit different dimensions of BELF interactionsthat are accomplished through various means. This study, thereby, aspires tocontribute to BELF speakers’ identity construction in the setting of internationalbusiness meetings and explore the way that these identities are reflected in language.
1.2 Rationale
The followings present the main driving forces for the author to explore identityconstruction in BELF meetings with a conversation-analytic approach.
Firstly, studies on identity construction are expected to touch cutting-edge topics.Identity has been one of the most researched topics in the past few decades, with itsresearch across a range of disciplines, from the area of social sciences, especiallysociology and social psychology, to linguistics. In linguistics, much attention has beenpaid to the role language plays in the construction of identity. In other words, identityis seen as “a discursively constructed phenomenon defined by interactional practices”(Sinkeviciute, 2019, p. 216). Recently, interest in professional identities in discursivepractices is on the rise. Yet among the majority of those studies, conversation-basedstudies of identities in business settings only account for a small presence. Researchinterest in business discourse and identities is a more recent phenomenon than theanalysis of institutional discourse, especially medical and legal discourse. In thissense, more work remains to be done with a central focus on the identi本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
