1.Introduction
In China,although teaching of vocabulary has been studied thoroughly in the past two decades,researchers and scholars have not paid enough attention to the importance of collocation,colligation,and semantic prosody.For a long time,researchers and scholars emphasize learning words in isolation and memorizing their meanings.The approach does no good for learning English.The knowledge about meanings is already studied by lots of researchers,scholars,while the collocation,colligation,and semantic prosody,especially the semantic prosody have not been studied deeply and widely enough.There is no doubt that collocation,colligation and semantic prosody can cause enormous numbers of problems for foreign language users and learners.Current dictionaries and reference books are unfortunately not capable of bridging the gap and cannot always satisfactorily help English L2 learners to find the correct collocation,colligation,and semantic prosody.Studies and works in this field would be of great help for all English L2 learners and English teachers.Language English L2 users and learners must understand that collocation,colligation,and semantic prosody are integrated with each other and cannot be separated.They are items that have to be considered as a whole part in the process of learning and teaching of English.
1.1 Research background
Collocation is a basic and important concept in the study of colligation and semantic prosody.It is during the near decades that researchers and scholars have studied the items of collocation,colligation,and semantic prosody.Firth,the father of the notion-collocation,first introduces collocation with a slogan,“you shall know a word by the company it keeps”(Firth, 1957).From then on,discussions and debates on collocation have been discussed endlessly. Colligation is also a significant notion that is related to semantic prosody.Firth becomes the forerunner of the study of colligation by raising the notion of colligation when he devotes himself in this field.
Firth first raises the definition of colligation.“Colligation is the syntactical or characteristics of text”.To be exact,we can say that colligation also means“the inter-relation of grammatical categories in syntactical structure”(Firth(1957,p.97).The feature of semantic prosody plays an important role in the field of word features.
