Chapter One Introduction

China's rapid development in economy and its growing engagement with the rest ofthe world have enhanced its influence in the international community. Following thereform and opening up policy carried out in the 1970s，the entry into the World TradeOrganization (WTO) in 2001，the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the Shanghai World Expo in2010 and the World University Games of Shenzhen in 2011, English has been enjoyingunprecedented popularity in China. It is unavoidable that some localized cultural elementsare being incorporated into the English language with the spread of English in China. As aresult，the nativization of English in China has aroused great interests among scholars athome and abroad.This study aims to investigate high-frequency verbs occurring in China's Englishnewspapers in an attempt to answer issues concerning the nativized use of high-frequencyverbs in the Chinese context.

1.1 General description of the study
During the past decades, there are a growing number of studies on the nativization ofEnglish in China. But many debates are centering on the legitimacy and appropriateness of“China English" as opposed to "Chinglish" in much recent work (杜争鸣，1998;杜瑞清&姜亚军，2001;姜亚军&杜瑞清，2003; He & David, 2009;李文中，1993;邱立& T全：新，2002;朱跃，2004). The present study will take a more comprehensiveperspective in placing the discussion in the Chinese context based on a large corpus, in thehope of bringing together fragmented arguments and evidence.

1.2 The necessity of the study
There are considerable studies in the field of globalization and localization of English.Most of them are the description of how different English variants develop or generate aswell as what the specific manifestations of them are. The achievement of both diachronicand synchronic descriptions of world Englishes and China English is flourishing(Kirkpatrick&Xu, 2002；李文中，1993; Wei&Fei, 2003; Yang, 2005; Zhang,2003) . However, the research in the application and its approaches as well as specificmethods of certain English variant, especially China English，is rather poor. It is quitenecessary to get a clear understanding of the status quo of China English by native andnon-native speakers in China and abroad. There is also the need to make great efforts inbringing China English into and converging with the big family of world Englishes throughwhich the status and impact of China English and even China would get furtherstrengthened and consolidated.
Newspaper plays an important role in modem society, with the language mirroring thesociety objectively and effectively. It supplies us with the latest news and keeps usinformed of what has happened locally and internationally. The language of newspaper ischaracterized by timeliness, accuracy, brevity and clarity. As China gets engaged ininternational affairs, there is the need for China to know about the rest of the world and forothers to understand China better. Thus, a large amount of information must be transmittedby newspaper.
