poem. The images in The Waste Land seem to be isolated without connection, but in fact, they are correlated with each other in meaning and effect. The images from the various quotations seem confusing and puzzling. But they are rooted in the Indo-European language family. In the poem, Eliot makes the whole Europe the waste land through the images.
The meaning of the poetic image language is of multi-layer, polysemy, and fuzziness. The understanding of the deep meaning of the poetic image language is conditioned by the cultural context. In poetry, the head image words or phrases seem to be pretty crucial. In order to understand the deep meaning of the poetic image language correctly, the cultural context that the head image words or phrases depend on must be taken into consideration. In The Waste Land, Eliot presents a modern waste land with abundant images: “stony rubbish,” “dead trees,” “the red rock,” “dry stone, no sound of water,” “the sunken river,” “oil and tar,” “Waste and empty the sea,” “nightingale’s jug,” “rattle of the bones,” “dead mountain of carious teeth,” “dry sterile thunder,” “unreal city,” “brown fog,” “bats with baby,” “bells from church,” “Empty chapel,” and “arid plain”. These images according to their features form four complete image systems: "Withering" system, "Death" system, "Sexual Passion" system and "Revival" system. Through the analyzing of each system, readers get the theme of the poem: The modern world of Europe is a waste land; the existence of the nature is withering. People indulge in sexual passion without the faith of religious. All the living creatures are on the way to death. The author feels sorrowful and distressing. He replaces his hope of survival on the “fire” to burn away all the evil, and “water” to bring new life.
