Chapter Five Conclusion
5.1 Major Findings
The thesis is designed to make a comparative study on the stylistic features ofthe English business news composed by the Chinese and the native English-speakingjournalists. With this target in mind, the thesis compares and analyzes 20 pieces ofsample news reports covering the same events on the three aspects—the linguisticdescription, the textual analysis and the contextual factors analysis. And it is foundthat the similarities and differences do exist on the stylistic features of the samplenews reports.Firstly, the linguistic features of the sample reports are compared on thegraphological, lexical and syntactic levels. In the comparison of graphological stylemarkers, it is found that all the news reports composed by the Chinese and the Englishnatives have a high proportion of short paragraphs and all the leads of the samplesreports are one-sentence paragraph, in order to provide the most information withinthe least space. To be more specific, short paragraphs, especially the one-sentenceparagraphs occur more frequent in English business news written by Chinese reportersthan those by English natives. English natives employ more long paragraphsconsisting of more than two sentences, which make their reports harder to beunderstood. At lexical level, it is found that the native English-speaking journalistshave a higher frequency in using compound words, especially the coined onescompared with the Chinese counterparts. They can coin nonce compounds accordingto the rules of word formation with higher proficiency, while the Chinese journalists,as EFL/ESL learners, can not have the same intuition toward the language of Englishas the natives. At the syntactic level, it can be seen that compared with the normalsentence length in modern English, the Chinese and native English speakers all tendto employ long sentences to carry as much information as possible. Besides, theEnglish natives employ more multiple sentences with a comparatively complicatedstructure. They prefer employing a lot of parentheses to provide some necessarybackground information. Although the Chinese use more simple sentences, theaverage sentence length of sample C is slightly longer than that of sample W, whichmeans the Chinese tend to well expand each part the sentence for the purpose ofincluding as much information as possible.Secondly, on the aspect of textual analysis, it is found that all the sample reportscan be divided into three本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
