Fowler (1991: 2), the pioneer of CriticalDiscourse Analysis (CDA), points out that news does not neutrally reflect social reality.And it is a practice that intervenes in the social construction of reality. CDA has madesignificant contributions to the study of news discourse from the linguistic perspectiveand provided readers with a way to free them from the control of news discourse.https://www.51lunwen.org/languagethesis/ As China is becoming more and more powerful and playing an irreplaceable partin the world, reports about China have become one of the focuses in Western media.Besides, Western media especially the Associated Press (AP) from the USA, theReuters from the UK, and the Agence France-Presse (AFP) from France, areinternationally influential. Thus it is practically significant for researchers to explorehow reports on China are presented and what images of China are created in theseWestern media. Great contributions can be made to mass communication, foreignlanguage teaching, especially the teaching English newspaper and magazine reading athome. Furthermore, this research can provide a new perspective for Chinese readers toread English news and help readers develop critical language awareness.

1.2 The Purposes of This Research研究的目的
In China, at present, most researches of critical analysis of news discourse focuson contrastive analysis of political, economic or war news reports, but few relevantstudies on news reports about China in Western media. Besides, coal mining accidentsthat have frequently happened in China have become one of the focuses in manymedia at home and abroad. Therefore, the reports on Chinese coal mining accidents inWestern media are chosen as analytic objects of this research.Based on the CDA, by employing the Fairclough’s model and analytic tools drawnfrom Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar (SFG), 15 news reports on Chinesecoal mining accidents in the Western media including the AP, the Reuters and the AFP,which are internationally influential, are chosen as the data. Critical analysis isconducted qualitatively and quantitatively. The language used in the news reports willbe examined to answer the following questions: Whether reporters embed their ownideologies into seemingly objective reports and what ideologies are embedded? HowChinese mines are evaluated? What images of China (the Chinese government inparticular) are created in the three Western media? And what social-historical factorsinfluence Western reporters’ ideologies and standpoints?
