The Objectives and Significance of the Study
Fuzziness is a ubiquitous phenomenon in language using process. It is sofamiliar to people that sometimes we use fuzzy language without awareness. For along time，people have been pursuing for precision in communication and theybelieve that fuzziness is a bad thing which may lead to misunderstanding, so it hasto be avoided as much as possible. But actually, fuzziness is the intrinsic nature ofhuman mind and natural language as well as precision, because many things andobjects in this world have no clear-cut boundaries.News is one of the most popular mass Media in our daily life，through whichpeople get access to the latest information. News is the vehicle of facts, so itsprimary feature and requirement is truthfulness. But we can find a large number offuzzy expressions in news reporting. So it is pretty natural to ask why newsreporting which requires much on truthfulness would allow abundant existence offuzzy language. The adaptation theory of Verschueren can help us to interpret thisphenomenon. And this is the objective of our study in this thesis, which aims atuncovering the role of fuzzy language in news discourse and trying to show howfuzzy language is chosen to make adaptation to the contextual correlates, includingthe mental world, social world，physical world and linguistic channels. What needsto be mentioned here is that the former relevant studies, as far as I know, all limitsto the research on adaptation to mental world, social world, and physical world.But the writer believes people also choose fuzzy language to adapt to the features of linguistic channels. And the writer also hopes this thesis can help language usersto understand and use fuzzy language in news better, inspire the readers to someextent, and make some contribution to the future researches on fuzzy languagephenomena from the perspective of linguistic adaptation theory.

Rationale of the Study
The study of fuzziness can be traced back to a very early age. In thecentury BC, the Greek philosopher Eubulides first paid attention to the fuzzyphenomenon in language. But the systematic study of theory has not formed until1965, when L.A Zadeh published his famous dissertation,set. Since then，hotresearches on fuzzy theory at home and abroad get involved in many fields. And inpragmatics, the study of language fuzziness reaches its maturity. But most of thesestudies are based on Grice's Cooperative Principle and Leech's PolitenessPrinciple. While the studies of language fuzziness from the perspective ofVerschueren's adaptation theory are few, and those which are related to Englishnews discourse are even fewer. The writer tries to find out that why news reportingwhich requires much on truthfulness allows the ubiquitous existence of fuzzylanguage, with the help of adaptation theory.The linguistic adaptation theory of Verschueren is chosen as the theoreticalframework of this thesis .Verschueren believes language using is a continuouschoice-making process.
