Newmark (2001) argues that although terms only account for 5% to 10% of the fulltext, they constitute a fundamental difference between technical English translation andother style translations. Vermeer (2000) believes that the purpose of the text is the firstcriterion of the translation process, so the first rule that all translations follow is the rule ofpurpose, that is to say, the end justifies the means. Hence, it can be seen that theappropriate translation of terms and proper nouns in the source text is the first step andfundamental requirement for understanding and conveying textual information. Based onthe requirements of Skopos Theory, the author mainly uses three methods for the terms andproper names appearing in this translation, including amplification and annotation, theadoption of conventional translated names, and the principle of context.

3.1.1Amplification andAnnotation

Amplification refers to the translator can use literal translation first, and then accountfor this meaning of the original words through annotation (Zou Tingting, 2017: 146).Literal translation, as the most widely used translation method in the translation oftechnical terms, means that a translation based on the original content, that is to say, basedon retaining the form of the original text, translation in a literal sense. However, as a reportintroducing technological trends, the version of the target language may be read by expertsand decision-makers engaged in the field of artificial intelligence, or by students or office workers who are new to the field, or even the general public. Related backgroundknowledge and acceptance ability vary greatly. Skopos Theory of translation requirestranslators to consider these issues when translating. Some terms and proper nouns arehighly specialized, affecting readers without background knowledge, or only using literaltranslation methods is easy to cause misreading, which hinders the primary purpose of thetranslation from conveying information. In the face of this situation, the translator uses themethod of amplification and annotation to place the corresponding interpretation behindterms or proper nouns, and strive to make the translation more explicit and clear, and thenthe version is more readable.

Conclusion and Recommendations

This project report is built on the author’s translation of the first, second and thirdchapters of IPO Technology Trends 2019—Artificial Intelligence. Under the guidance oftranslation teleology, combining the stylistic features of scientific and technological texts,the pivotal issues and difficulties in the original text are analyzed, and correspondingspecific translation strategies are summarized. The problems that the author encountered intranslation mainly focus on the following three aspects: terminology and proper nouns,long sentences, and discourse cohesion.
