Chapter Two Process Description

2.1 Preparation

In June 2019, the translator began searching for translation material online or inbookstores, unintentionally learning about The Pilot’s Wife, the best-selling novel in1998 written by an American writer Anita Sherve, which tells that a widow discoveredher pilot husband had an affair in the course of investigating the death causes of herhusband. The brilliantly gripping plot made the translator curious about the otherworks of Anita Sherve. As a result, she found that The Stars Are Fire explores thesecret between the married people, likewise. The difference lies in that The Stars AreFire gives more priority to female development, arousing her interests. Having takeninto consideration the meaning, the text type, the translatability, and other factors ofthe text, the translator was ultimately determined to select The Stars Are Fire as thetranslation material.

The next step was to generate a comprehensive understanding of the source text.Firstly the translator endeavored to gather relevant information about Anita Sherve,the writer of The Stars Are Fire, to know the background of writing and ascertain thestyle and features of her works. Then she read through this novel. For the first reading,the translator roughly understood the plot, character relations, and the theme the bookintended to convey aided by Oxford Dictionary and Collins Dictionary. During the second reading, she prioritized the first five chapters, and marked the key and difficultpoints, finding that some of the dialogues and inner monologues were hard tounderstand. Meanwhile, she did a comparative reading of the Chinese versions ofShreve’s other works, such as All He Ever Wanted (2004), The Last Time They Met(2007), and Body Surfing (2008). The extensive reading of these related worksprovided the translator with translating references. Besides, the translator read somebooks to introduce the translation theory and practice, such as Translation Studies(2010), A Linguistic Theory of Translation (1965), Introducing Translations studies:Theories and Applications (2012), Language, Culture, and Translating (1993), andetc. In this way, she earnestly acquired some translation methods and strategies:conversion, amplification, division, adjustment of word order and etc, a crucial guideto her translation practice, and she was aware that the Adaptation Theory put forwardby Jef Verschueren was conducive to avoiding translation mistakes in the translationof The Stars Are Fire, and boosting translation efficiency.

2.2 Translating

After the preparation work, the translator began translating The Stars Are Fire. Itis universally acknowledged that translating is quite different from reading. Readersare allowed to be greatly influenced by their subjectivity, but not practicable for atranslator.
