In a word,the use of language is a kind of social behavior, and the language researches must be combined with its usage from the comprehensive aspects of cognition, society andculture. Therefore, he proposed three key notions in chapter 2 of UnderstandingPragmatic, namely, the three properties of language, including variability,negotiability and adaptability, to demonstrate the factors behind the continuouslinguistic choices during the process of the language use.

4.1 Summary and Findings

This translation practice selected the first six chapters of The Stars Are Fire as atranslation task. Before translation, the translator searched relevant information aboutthe author, the novel, and analyzed the text features. The Stars Are Fire, an initiationstory, features its flexible literary language and numerous dialogues and monologuesbetween different characters. Such characteristics posed a great challenge for thistranslation practice; the translator found viable solutions to it, and a detailed analysisof techniques in dealing with frequent translation difficulties under the guidance ofthe Adaptation Theory was given in this report. In general, the translator inevitablyfound enormous benefits from this practice.

In terms of theory, the Adaptation Theory emphasizes the three properties oflanguage, among which “adaptability” , the core, enables people to make flexiblelinguistic choices from a variable range of possibilities to satisfy communicativeneeds. When the theory is applied in translation, this kind of cross-culturalcommunicative activity, the people here refers to not only the speakers, but also thetranslator. In this regard, this property makes it possible for the translator to adapt thelinguistic choices to the current context in the source text. In translating The Stars AreFire, the translator was influenced by both linguistic and non-linguistic factors whenmaking choices. As mentioned above in the first chapter, the language structure insource text are highly flexible, and the characters’ personalities and emotions weredepicted through numerous dialogues and mental activities. Usually the covertinformation in those descriptions is comprehensible to the translator, but it’s hard to express it for fear of excessive translation. To handle them, the translator analyzed thetypical translation examples mainly from two perspectives, namely dynamicadaptation to target language, and adaptation to the characters’ personalities andemotions. Semantic extension, four-character structure, division, omission, andrestructuring were employed to ensure the readability and fluency of the translatedtext since English and Chinese differ greatly in lexical and syntactic levels. Theaddition of modal particles and adverbs, amplification, cohesion and etc, wereadopted to represent the emotions and personalities of characters through therendering of the dialogues and monologues in this novel. It’s seen that the AdaptationTheory provides certain directions on the strategies of dialogues and monologuestranslation.
