3.1 TheAdaptation Theory

The Adaptation Theory put forward by Jef Verschueren (1952-) was selected astheoretical basis for analysis of problems and difficulties in translating the excerpts ofThe Stars Are Fire. The Adaptation Theory originates from Darwin’s EvolutionaryEpistemology which claims that the organism lives through a process of beingcontinuously recognized, including participation in finding the problems, choose totake actions, and adaptation to environment, society, and even culture. Thisphilosophical truth is not only applicable in biological research, but also the filed oflinguistics. As for language, the interpretation of language function depends not on thenatural selection but on the direct selection, that is, relying on the adaptation tounderstand the language and play the function of language. Afterwards, theAdaptation Theory emerged as a compete and mature theory in 1999 when theBelgian linguist Jef Verschueren published his book Understanding Pragmatic(1999).
