2.1.1 Preparations of the Background of the Source Text

Before translating a book, translators need to have a general understanding of the ST and its author. It is necessary to know the author’s social background, philosophical viewpoint, creative intention, and personal style. The translator inquired on Google and Wikipedia for the information of the author. As a famous linguist, Robert Chaudenson was born on April 12, 1937, in Lyon, France. In 1962, shortly after he completed his “literary classification” at Lyon University, he was registered as a “Volunteer of French Army National Action Service” in Reunion. Later, he became interested in the variations of Creole and French and defended his two-volume thesis Creole Vocabulary in Reunion in Paris Sorbonne University (now Paris IV University) in 1972. The book was subsequently published in Honnore Pine in Paris in 1974 when he had become the primary catalyst for studying Creole dialects and cultures in French, especially those appearing in French Indian Ocean overseas provinces. 

2.2 While-Translation

This chapter consists of two parts. The translator in the first part mainly analyzes the difficulties encountered in translation practice. In the second part, the translator gives the solutions to the problems. 

2.2.1 The Major Difficulties in the Translation

In this translation practice, difficulties encountered by the translator can be described from three levels: lexical, syntactic, and textual level. The problems at the lexical level lie in the fact that the ST is a highly specialized academic text containing many linguistic terminologies such as “linguistic appropriation” “relexification theories”, and “baby talk”, etc. Besides, the ST also has a large number of names of persons and places. Moreover, there are many French words in the ST because the original text is a French version, and this causes more difficulty to the translator. Due to the differences in language, culture, and professional background among the author and target readers, the inaccurate translation will cause misunderstanding for the target readers and non-professional readers. In the process of translating sentences, because there are many long and complex sentences in the ST, the translator needs to analyze the structure of these sentences to avoid logical confusion of syntactic translation. At the textual level, the most difficult thing is how to use cohesive methods to translate paragraphs more logically and fluently to translate more in line with the reading habits of Chinese readers.
