本文作者首先从委婉语作为一种语言学概念入手，对其作出新的定义。然后从语音、语义、语法等方面探讨了英语委婉语的构成，分析了委婉语的分类、特点和社会功能，并从语用学角度研究了英语委婉语在交际过程中违反合作原则、遵循礼貌原则和面子论。最后，本文重点论述了英语委婉语对英语教学的启示。

Introduction
With the development of globalization,people need a universal language–English,for communication.Such needs have prompted English’s popularization in China.However,our English language teaching normally emphasizes“Standard English”.Most teachers tend to only focus on teaching language skills such as language knowledge explanation and practice, vocabulary usage classification,syntax and structure analysis.They seldom explain the cultural differences between native language and target language or give students practice on theircommunication ability,not to mention pay attention to whether their own language at class is appropriate.
Students also tend to believe that they can communicate smoothly once they master pronunciation,grammar and vocabulary with no need to learn more language strategies.This tendency becomes more obvious in career education high school after middle school and high school.As a result,English class becomes spiritless with very little class interaction or communication between teachers and students.In the long run,students will have no idea about cross-cultural communication strategies after they step out of school and get frustrated in actual communication because of their improper language.In order to avoid communication failure caused by“straightforward speaking”and ensure smooth cross-cultural communication,it is very important to introduce Euphemism into English teaching,and also essential to use euphemism between teachers and students.
Euphemism is a common phenomenon in all languages around the world.In all cultures, people try to avoid direct reference to certain concepts or subjects in communication.When talking about certain topics or using certain words,they normally took“avoidance”attitude to keep away from words which might cause unpleasantness,complain or damage to feelings or relationship.But“avoidance”doesn’t mean“not to talk about it at all”.To express ideas and exchange information,people adopt circumlocutory approach,using vague,pleasing to ears, pleasant and polite words.This language phenomenon is euphemistic expression,which resulted in the creation of large number of euphemisms.
