Chapter II Process Description

2.1 Preparation Before Interpreting

“Interpretation is a method for speakers in different languages to communicateinformation with each other on-site(Zhang,48).”After receiving and understandingthe original information in the source language,the interpreter needs to mobilize therelevant knowledge reserve and output it in the target language.To a certain extent,the knowledge reserve affects the quality of interpretation,so it can be seen that thepreparation before interpreting is necessary.Bao Gang(1996:42)pointed out that thepreparation before interpreting is an indispensable part of the interpretation practice.The interpreter can collect background information,make a glossary and prepareequipment,etc.,which can reduce the psychological pressure caused by theinterpreter’s nervousness on-site.

2.1.1 Understanding Simultaneous Interpretation

Zhang Weiwei(1999)defined simultaneous interpretation as the practice inwhich the interpreter orally expresses ideas or emotions delivered in one language inanother language at a speed almost synchronized with the speaker's speech.It can beseen that simultaneous interpretation can greatly shorten the time of meetings,speeches,etc.Therefore,simultaneous interpretation has become preferable for majorconferences and official meetings.

It is simple to conclude from the above concepts that simultaneous interpretationhas the following characteristics:

1)The speech and the interpreting are carried out almost simultaneously,which is thebiggest difference between simultaneous interpretation and consecutive interpretation.And it is also the advantage of simultaneous interpretation over other forms ofinterpretation.

2)In general,the simultaneous interpreting is directly affected by the speed of thespeaker.

2.2 Interpreting Process
