Chapter Two Theoretical Basis
2.1 Brief Introduction of the Interpretive Theory
The school of interpretation proposes the unique insight that the first stage ofinterpretation is comprehension.The theory states that first,the interpreter needs tounderstand the linguistic meaning of the original language,but it does not stop therebecause the interpreter needs to convey the communicative meaning.The interpreterfirst listens to the audible linguistic symbols,analyzes them with existing cognitiveinformation and bilingual knowledge,and understands the speaker’s intention.Inaddition,the interpreter needs to pay attention to the fact that the speaker maysometimes have some implicit meanings that are not explicitly expressed.Secondly,the handling of implied information should also be handled with certain skills.Theoriginal language sometimes implies information in order to make the translation readers have the same emotional experience,so the interpreter should have a goodgrasp of the proportion of these implied meanings when expressing them in thetranslation.
At this stage,the interpreter should go beyond the constraints of the linguisticsymbols of the original language and focus on the emotional and cognitive meaningthat the original language wants to convey.Interpretation is transient,and althoughthe linguistic form may be forgotten,the meaning of the language is left in mind.The specific linguistic symbols may disappear,but the memory of the non-linguisticforms remains in the minds of the speaker and the interpreter.These non-linguisticforms can be called thoughts or facts.Completing this step,the interpreter iscompletely constrained by the linguistic structure of the original language andgenerates thoughts of cognitive and emotional meaning,which are stored in memoryin some vehicles.The interpreter remembers the content of the understood messageas the words disappear,free from the linguistic form of the original language,andaccurately paraphrases the content of the original in her way.When the interpreterfocuses on the meaning rather than on the form of the original words and structure,she concentrates more on the logical level of analysis,understands the speaker’sintention to speak,and thus,makes the output of the target language more accurateand natural,and the quality of the translation better.
2.2 The Feasibility of Consecutive Interpretation Guided by theInterpretive Theory
Lectures are a vehicle for learners to acquire knowledge.The instructor framesthe content to be taught before the course begins and then delivers it in a live oralpresentation.In a lecture,the speaker uses a lot of technical terms and also a lot ofcolloquial expressions.In the process of interpretation,if the interpreter onlyinterprets word by word,it may not only burden the memory of the interpreter butalso make the translation stiff and incoherent.
