2.1.1 Multimodal Discourse Analysis based on Systemic Functional Grammar

Barthes (1977) has explored the interactive role of pictures in expressing meaning. He (1977) argues that people understand the meaning of the pictures on the premise that there existed a linkage between knowledge and human perception. In his view, a picture contains three kinds of information, namely, linguistic information, encoded picture information and unencoded picture information (Barthes, 1977). Language could drive action by setting up meaning in the sequence of information that is not present in the picture itself. In a picture, at least at the level of textual information, the relation between the signifieds and the signifiers is not one of “transformation”, but one of “recording” relationship (Barthes, 1977). In short, he analyzes several meanings of pictures more from a linguistic viewpoint. Although, he has not proposed a theoretical framework for the analysis of pictures. However, it was Barthes’ exploration of pictures that transfers the attention of linguists to pictures.

Halliday (1978) has emphasized that language is a semiotic system and that language can express other semiotic systems. He argues that the main significance of language lied in its meta-functions: ideational, interpersonal, and textual function, and these meta-functions give rise to SFG. By the 1990s, O’Toole (1994) has formally applied functional linguistics to paintings, statues, and other works of art to propose a theory of MDA. O’Toole (1994) argues that visual art, like photography and most other symbolic systems we used to create meaning, can be best understood, and interpreted through three distinct but related dimensions.

2.2 Image construction

In Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary (the 7th edition), “image” is interpreted as “the impression that a person, an organization or a product, etc. gives to the public” (Lu Gusun, e al., 2012: 1017). So, the essence of “image” is a kind of people’s “cognition”. There are some disciplines, like classical realism, constructivism, giving attention to “image” study. Therefore, “image” has specific connotations from different disciplinary perspectives. The connotation of “image” adopted in this study means perception, opinion and evaluation caused by the sum of internal and external elements of things through some form of information intermediary. It can reflect public values and aesthetics, the degree of public recognition, love and support for this thing. Scholars, majoring in image construction, mainly focus on media image, nation image, female image, city image, etc, such as Luan Yimei (2007), Wang Pengjin (2009).
