In his famous article The Need for a New Medical Model,Engel(1997)criticizedthe biomedical model based on reductionism and the mind-body dichotomy,and calledfor the construction of a new bio-psycho-social medical model.He believed that forillness and health,people should be seen as a whole,with full consideration given tothe psychological and social influences on illness.Hunter(1989)believed thatmedicine is“science about individuals”,and the epistemology of medicine should benarrative,not just phenomenological(medical-scientific research)or ontological(clinical work),while narrative is exactly the bridge connecting medical theory(scientific knowledge about diseases)and practice(every patient).

2.2 Discourse Analysis of Death

Discourse is a type of social practice and the application of vocal and writtenforms of language(Fairclough,2001).In this study,we adopt Gao’s(ibid)definition ofdeath-themed discourse.

There are numerous potential research topics for death-themed discourse,depending on the research goals and theoretical orientations of the researchers.Research of death-themed discourse has been conducted in both non-linguistic andlinguistic perspectives of language over the past 30 years as an interdisciplinaryresearch field.These two research focuses will be presented in the ensuing subsections.

2.2.1 Linguistic Perspective

In recent years,the research on death discourse has become increasingly hot.Overall,the related research on this topic can be classified into three categories:theconstruction and exploration of death-themed discourse,the empirical research ondeath-themed discourse by using multi-disciplinary theories,and the literature reviewof death-themed discourse studies.
