Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Two versions of the novel

“Lang Tu Teng” is a novel about people and wolves on the Inner Mongolian Grasslands. Itwas published by Changjiang Literature and Arts Press in 2004. At present, Goldblatt’sEnglish version, Wolf Totem, is one of the best sellers among translated novels in China.

2.1.1 Original version “Lang Tu Teng” in Chinese by Jiang Rong

The author of “Lang Tu Teng” is Jiang Rong. His real name is Lü Jiamin. He was born in1946, and later his family moved from Jiangsu to Beijing in 1957 because of the change inhis father’s job. He graduated at a middle school that was affiliated with the China CentralAcademy of Fine Arts in 1966, and it was in 1966 when it was the year of the China’sCultural Revolution that his education came to an end. In the next year, he volunteered to goto the East Ujimchin Banner of Inner Mongolia to work at his age of 21. As a laborer, helived with local nomads in Inner Mongolia until he was 33 years old. During the 11 years ofliving in Inner Mongolia, he is very interested in Inner Mongolia’s culture, history, tradition, and local folklore. In particular, he was fascinated to Mongolia’s mysterious grassland wolves,so he spent a lot of time collecting folk stories about wolves. Under such a background, JiangRong wrote “Lang Tu Teng.” In 1982, he returned to Beijing again, and studied in politicalscience at the Chinese Academy of Social Science. He obtained the degree of Master in lawin 1982 and gained a job as a college teacher in Beijing, then he and his wife have been living in Beijing since he retired.

Up to now, except for the work of “Lang Tu Teng,” Jiang Rong also wrote LittleWolves that is mainly for children, and it was published by the Changjiang Literature and ArtsPress.

2.2 Howard Goldblatt’s translation thought

Howard Goldblatt is not only a famous scholar in America but also a translator ofcontemporary Chinese literature. He has translated nearly 50 works that all are written byfamous writers, such as Jia Pingao, Mo Yan, Xiao Hong and Jiang Rong, and thesetranslations won national awards and received unanimous acclaim. Goldblatt is called “FirstPerson in Contemporary Chinese Literature Translation” by famous scholar Xia Zhiqing.

Howard Goldblatt (2002) himself published the Writing Life in The Washington Post, and gave a more systematic and detailed elaboration of his translation ideas.

The first principle is faithfulness. The faithfulness has two meanings: the first is thattranslation must be faithful to source text. Howard Goldblatt once compares source text tofish, target text to shrimp to reflect the importance of faithfulness to source text. The secondis that translation should also be faithful to the readers, serving the target language readers. The differences between Chinese and Western cultures determine that absolute faithfulness isnot possible. In order to make readers understand “Lang Tu Teng” more easily, Wolf Totemneeds to be flexible and innovative.

The second principle is that the translation is a rewriting. Therefore, in the process oftranslation, tran论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
