2.2 While-Translation

High-quality translation not only requires the full comprehension of the source text but also asks for the translator to be able to find out the key points and difficulties while translating. In this section, the translator talks about some tricky problems and the breakthroughs she made so as to better distribute her attention in the translation process. 

2.2.1 Difficulties in the Translation

There is no doubt that difficulties will occur in every translation process. First of all, as for the selected chapter—chapter one and two, the author shows us her childhood living with her beloved families such as former father, biological mother, aunt, and uncle. Therefore, some daily conversations between the author and her families happened frequently. For example, when the author was young, she talked with her father about Adam's apple one day. This is a father-daughter  conversation,  and  if  the  translator  gave  up  considering  such  an  intimate relationship, and translated version would not reflect the relationship background beyond the conversation.  In  order  to  deliver  the  author’s  writing  purpose  and  refresh  the  scene,  the translator had to make proper adjustments to the conversation, especially the expression and the tone of voice.

Secondly, the genre of the text serves an important role while translation. In other words, the translator should have a strong sense of aesthetics since the excerpt’s stylistics falls into the literary text category. For example, in the selected chapter, the author used many adjectives to describe her uncle Son’s clothing: He wore elegant lace-up shoes, finely ribbed undershirts, and creased trousers, even when he mowed his law. In Chinese culture, four-letter expressions are frequently applied in Chinese literature texts due to their aesthetic forms and meaning. To be better in line with the target text, the translator should use four-letter phrases where necessary, which exerts an impact on the quality of the translation version.
