ogy school that emerged was structural narratology,which emphasized the internal and abstract research of fictional works.Structural narratologytreated narrative works as an internal and complete system,free from any external factors,which restored the independence and internality of narrative works.However,critics believedthat structural narratology overemphasized the independence of the text,but ignored theconnection between the work and the social,historical and cultural context.Therefore,post-classical narratology was born.Post-classical narratology reflected on the existingnarratology theories and strengthened the background connection between narrative text andhistory and culture.It was worth noting that the greatest contribution of post-classicalnarratology was to expand the field of it.Nowadays,narratology has developed in-depth in allaspects and different schools such as historical narratology,educational narratology andpsychological narratology have emerged.However,both structural narratology andpost-classical narratology have neglected the spatiality of narrative intentionally orunintentionally.Moreover,from the perspective of literary creation,modernist texts were indeed breaking the traditional linear laws of time,highlighting certain spatial characteristics.Therefore,the research of space narratology was ready to come out.

2.2 The Power Turn of Spatial Narrative:From Spatial Narrative to SpacePower

With the continuous development of spatial narrative theories,different schools ofdiscussion on the spatiality of narratives have gradually moved to various directions.Withinthe scope of sociology,Foucault put forward the power of space in the study of power,whichis,the theory of space power.Space power theory originated from Foucault’s discourse powertheory and was commonly used in sociology field.But with the improvement of it,the theoryof space power has also been applied in the field of literature,especially in narratology.Compared with the traditional narratology theory,the connotation of space power theory isbroader.For it not only pays attention to the text from the perspective of narration,but alsogives the text more social meaning,which is,power.It can be implied that space power theoryis a part of spatial narrative theory,but it is not entirely a theory of spatial narrative.It is thepower turn of spatial narrative research.

Many postmodern thinkers and theorists started to consider the status and function ofspace in society.In fact,long before the rise of it,Foucault put forward an innovative view onspace theory:people often accused me of being obsessed with the concept of space and I wasreally obsessed with them,given that space made me break through the previous space-timeduality(quoted in Bao Yaming,1997).Later,Foucault pointed out that in traditional concepts,space was regarded as dead,fixed and non-dialectical entity;on the contrary,time representedabundance life and dialectic.However,he believed that the dual relationship that time hadlong dominated in the space-time view had begun to deconstruct.Therefore,it could beclearly seen that Foucault’s theory of time and space had gradually begun to turn topostmodern geography.In addition,due to Foucault’s personal fascination with discourse andpower,he finally combined space and power to form a unique space-power theory.
