In As I Lay Dying,religion and the background of the times were the most influentialfactors in character creation and event development.They were in the highest and mostcentral position in space.At the same time,from the development of the story,they were alsothe driving force for the formation of changes.This meant that religion and the background ofthe times,as the two major elements of the supreme power in the space,promoted the flow ofcharacter consciousness and the development of the story.In the entire power hierarchy thatreconstructed the world,religion and the background of the times were at the top of thepyramid.They restricted the behavior of the characters’and plots trend in the story and firmlyimprisoned the reconstructed world under their shadows,thereby shaping the absolute spacepower system in spatial narrative.In this section,on the basis of the spatial narrative inChapter 3,this thesis will further explore the religious power under discipline view as well as the context of times from the economic power view.

4.1.1 Space Power Discipline and Religion

Foucault proposed the concepts of“discipline”and“panopticon”in the book Disciplineand Punish:The Birth of the Prison.“Discipline”referred to a method of how powercontrolled people.The central observation tower had a ring of large windows facing to thecircular building which was divided into many different small cells.These cells imprisonedlunatics,patients,criminals,workers and students.An overseer in the central observationtower could observe the actions of the prisoners in the surrounding small rooms from theangle opposite to the light source.As consequence,the monitoring tower had shutters so theobserved could not know whether he was being monitored and he dare not act rashly.Thismodel made prisoners psychologically feel that they were in a state of being imprisonedthroughout his life,thereby forcing himself to follow the rules and achieve the state ofself-imprisonment all the time.

Chapter 5 Conclusion
