Chapter Four Results and Discussion

On  the  basis  of  data  analysis,  this  chapter  is  going  to  discuss  the  results  of  the  present study from the following three aspects: main error types in the writings from the three grades in  4.1;  similarities  and  differences  among  errors  from  the  three  grades  in  4.2;  and  possible causes for the errors in 4.3.  

4.1   Main Error Types in the Writings from All the Three Grades 
Section 4.1 aims at answering the first research question mentioned before in Chapter 3. It  consists  of  two  parts,  namely  4.1.1  errors  found  in  all  the  writings  and  4.1.2  main  error types of each grade. As has already mentioned in Chapter Three, the total word number of freshmen’s samples is  9252.  The  sum  of  the  word  number  in  Grade  Two  is  8914  and  the  word  count  of  Grade Three’s writings is 8558. Therefore, the overall total word number of the writings collected is 26724  and  on  average,  there  are  178.16  words  per  piece  of  writing.  Among  all  the  samples, 1763 errors have been identified, that is to say, every 15.16 words, there is an error and each piece  has  11.75  errors.  As  is  seen  in  Table  3.4-1  before,  there  are  four  categories  and  23 subcategories of writing errors in the samples collected from the three grades. In order to have a clear overall view of the numbers and the percentages of all the categories and subcategories from  the  three  grades,  Table  4.1.1-1  is  employed  below  this  paragraph.  From  the  table,  it  is quite  clear  that  on  general,  lexical  errors  own  the  most  percentage  among  all  the  four categories with the number of 649 and the percentage of 36.81%.
