Chapter One Introduction
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the present study. The first section introduces the background of the present research; the second section lays out the purpose and necessity of the research and the last section serves as the outline of the
thesis.
1.1 Research Background
English majors should master some basic language skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing skill is listed at last but it is not the least. Instead, it is more complicated and difficult for English majors to have a good command of it than other skills. Besides, the ultimate goal of foreign language teaching and learning is to cultivate learners with a certain level of communicative competence, and writing is definitely a quite important aspect of the competence. The writing part in English exams offers a comprehensive test for students’ ability of using basic second or foreign language knowledge. However, for Chinese foreign language learners, writing is still and has always been a weak side as is shown in the scores of so many kinds of tests such as CET4, CET6, TEM4 and TEM8 and so on (Jiang and Wang, 2008). Various errors can be found in their compositions just as what is known to all that making errors is inevitable in the process of learning till mastering a new language. Obviously, there must be some differences and also similarities among the errors made by learners of different grades with different levels of language proficiency. Analyzing learners’ language errors in their writings in details will surely help learners to find out exactly what the errors are, where the errors are likely to appear and why they make such errors. With these elements in mind, second or foreign language learners will be enabled to target their problems in writing and thus they can pay direct attention to how to make progress. Error analysis is also rather valuable for second or foreign language teachers because when dealing with errors in writing, teachers can detect flaws in their teaching process and these findings will in turn help teachers to improve their teaching plans and to perfect their teaching methods.

1.2 Research Purpose and Necessity
The task of this present study is to identify errors in the writings of English majors in three different grades from a normal university in Jilin Province and then to categorize them into different error types. This thesis aims to find out the differences and similarities among errors and error types of the three grades in order to see the developing tendency of learner writings.
