Howard Goldblatt is considered as the most important trans lator of Chinese literature in the west. Up to now, he has beenlearning, teaching, and studying Chinese for over 20 years, whichhas equipped him with systemic and profound knowledge aboutChinese culture and language. Due to his great effort and distin guished talent his works are well accepted by the western reader.Born in 1939 in Long Beach, California, Howard Goldblattreceived a B.A. from Long Beach State College in 1961, an M.A. from San Francisco State University in 1971, and a PhD fromIndiana University in 1974. He has been teaching modern Chi nese literature and culture for over 25 years since he first taughtat the University of Colorado in 1988, who is presently a re search professor of Chinese at the University of Notre Dame. Re nowned as the foremost translator of modern and contemporaryChinese literature, he has translated about 40 literary works bymore than 25 Chinese writers from mainland, Hong Kong, andTaiwan in the past 30 years. Moreover, he serves as editor of sev eral academic journals and magazines and has contributed agreat deal of articles concerning Chinese literature and transla tion to such influent journals and magazines as The WashingtonPost, Los Angeles Times, and World Literature Review.As a talented language learner, Goldblatt is a master of bothChinese language and culture, showing great diligence and metic ulousness in his translation works, which guarantee the populari ty of his translations among the Western readers. Besides, he ismore than a prolific translator. Besides Mo Yan’s HonggaoliangJiazu, he has also translated many other Chinese works, includ ing Mo Yan’s the Republic of Wine(酒国)(Goldbaltt,2000)，BigBreasts and Wipe Hips(丰乳肥臀) (Goldbaltt,2005)and Life andDeath Are Wearing Me Out（生死疲劳）(Goldbaltt,2008), XiaoHong’s Tales of Human River(呼兰河传) and Field of Life andDeath(生死场) (Goldbaltt,2002)，Su Tong’s My life as Emperor(我的帝王生涯) (Goldbaltt,2005)，Bi Feiyu’s the Moon Opera(青衣)(Goldbaltt,2007)and Jiang Rong’s Wolf Totem(狼图腾) (Goldbaltt,2008).Goldbaltt has got high recognition in the area of translationdue to his outstanding translations and great contributions. For in stance, his translations of Turbulence (浮躁（)written by Jia Ping wa）won the 1991 Pegasus Prize for Literature, and his transla tion of Note of a Desolate Man(荒人手记)(written by Chu Tien-wen)won the 2000 National Translation Award given by the Amer ican Literary Translators Association. Besides, during the firstfour years of the Man Asian Literary Prize, there are three win ner works translated by Goldblatt, namely, Wolf Totem(狼图腾)byJiang Rong in 2007, The Boat to Redemption by Su Tong in2009, and Three Sisters(玉米)by Bi Feiyu in 2010. What’s more,he himself also received 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship for hisspecial contribution in the field of translation.
