Through Jude’s own marriage experience, Hardy violently attacksthe bourgeois marriage system which is considered as a social custom. He clearlyshows that many people’s individuality is not only destroyed, but also distorted in aninterest-oriented and loveless marriage, and love becomes an ideal that cannot beexpected. Furthermore, the shelleyan marriage although ends in tragedy, it triumphsthe traditional marriage system which is maintained by social conventions, religiousmorality and legal system.
