5.1.1.1 Master identities

The category of master identities embodies identities that are stable and fixed of self, such as gender, age and nationality, as Tracy & Robles (2013) declared. Taken in thissense, master identities are also preexisting and brought to the interaction by speakers, which can change from situation to situation. For instance, speakers can construct anational identity as an American in one situation and shifts to the gender identity as afemale in the next. In the context of BELF meetings, in which speakers are fromdifferent cultural background and cooperate under the same English language, themost constructed master identity is national identity that demonstrates speakers’nationality, as shown in the following extract.

CHAPTER SIXCONCLUSION

6.1 Major findings

The present study probes into the identity construction in BELF meetings by adoptingHave’s (2007) conversation-analytic approach and Tracy & Robles’s (2013) theory onidentity construction to classify identity and to explore the function of identitiesconstructed. On the basis of the analysis, the major findings are concluded as followscorresponding to the research questions in Chapter one.

(1) Fix types of identities under three categories are constructed by BELFspeakers in total. They are national identity, chair identity, partner identity, cheerleader identity, and expert-novice identity. According to Tracy &Robles’s (2013) classification of identity category, national identity is under thecategory of master identities, while chair identity is classified as the interactionalidentities while the latter three belongs to personal identities, suggesting that theidentity construction in BELF meetings are dynamic and varies from one situation toanother. Among these five types of identities, the partner identity is most frequentlyconstructed, followed by expert-novice identity, cheerleader identity and chairidentity. National identity accounts for the least number of identities.

(2) The analyses of data reveal that each identity possesses different features andinclination concerning conversation structure. When speakers perform a nationalidentity, they tend to take a dominant position in the interaction which is manifestedin their more prominent turn number and turn length. When constructing a chairidentity, BELF speakers show a frequent use of insertion sequence to self-select as thespeaker of next turn, so as to have the meeting agenda in control. With regard to theconstruction of partner identity, BELF speakers incline to initiate interruption and other-initiated other-repair to provide assistance for others. In comparison, those whoperform the identity of partner as an effort to promote cooperation prefer the use ofself-initiated self-repair. As for the cheerleader identity, it is found that in order toimprove the meeting ambiance, the speakers manage to arrange their turn in a mannerthat is preferred by their recipients, which on the basis of mutual understanding ofcurrent situation. Last but not least, the expert-novice identity is co-constructed byBELF speakers in seeking explanation for specific questions and self-referring toexpertise. The speakers of novice identity prefer to initiate self-initiate self-repair,while the speakers of expert identity rely more on frequent论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
