The Wider Public And World Opinion Over Irish Hunger Strikes 

Summary

The Irish hunger strikes in 1980-1981 were the events of great historical magnitude. The British Government’s policies toward the IRA, from internment without trial to Ulsterization, were stimulus to result in IRA protests in the H-Blocks. Removal of Special Category Status in 1975 by the British directly induced the republican prisoners to launch hunger strikes. Irish hunger strike of 1981, which was involved in deaths of ten men, was viewed as a watershed in the struggle for Irish freedom, not only for it led to the prisoners in the H-Blocks obtaining their five demands which the republican prisoners sought for, but also launched Sinn Fein to enter into the political stage. Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, took a strategy of Armalite and Ballot Box instead of sole armed struggle in the late 1970s, while the hunger strikes converted Sinn Fein into the peace process.
This dissertation firstly investigates the process of the hunger strikes, examining the British policies to the IRA, and discusses the republican prisoners’ protests from the blanket protest to the hunger strikes. Secondly, the dissertation analyses the British Government, the Irish Government’s reactions to the first hunger strike and the second hunger strike respectively, stressing how the hard-line stance of the British resulted in the second hunger strike, and how the Irish played its role in the strikes. Last but not least, the dissertation discusses SDLP’s, unionist parties’, Sinn Fein’s, the Catholic Church’s, the Irish public’s, the republicans’, the Irish American, and international opinions over the hunger strikes.
