level. In a broadsense, the Internet catchword refers to any language related to the Internet, such astechnical terms, terms and common terms. In a narrow sense, the Internet catchwordrefers to the language used in chatting rooms, Weibo and other social networkingsites. Generally speaking, the Internet catchword can be defined as the languageproduced and used on the Internet (Xing Junxiao 2012).

The Internet catchword was born in the early 1990s and mainly used to improve theefficiency of Internet chatting and to achieve the effect of humor. Over time, with thenumber of netizen rising, it is classified as a form of language. In the 21 st century,the Internet technology innovates constantly, in this condition, this language form hasdeveloped rapidly. Nowadays, the Internet catchword has become an indispensablepart of both network life and real life.

The Internet catchword comes from hot social events and are closely related tocurrent events. It can be formed by the development of culture, the need ofcommunication and social hot spots. It can reflect the social changes and popularpsychology in certain time, and it is the product of social politics, economy, culture,environment, people’s psychological activities and other factors within a certainperiod. Because of the popularity of the Internet, the huge number of Internet usersand the rapid speed of network communication, once Internet catchwords areproduced and accepted by people, its spreading speed and coverage will beirresistible. As a new and unique language form, Internet catchwords are not onlynovel in content, but also humorous in style and easy to be accepted anddisseminated by the public (Wang Aihong, 2014). Now, many Internet catchwordshave been used in traditional media such as TV, radio, newspapers and so on.

4.1 Introduction

As the Internet has gradually become a platform for people to understand society, getnews and engage in self-entertainment, people are gradually used to communicatingwith netizen and expressing their personal views in online forums around the world.During this period, more and more Internet catchwords are about to come out. Forexample, the birth and prevalence of Internet catchwords such as “prehistoric powers(洪荒之力)”, “Totally confused(一脸懵逼)” and “Melon-eating masses(吃瓜群众)” have expanded the original Chinese vocabulary. Therefore, in order to promotethe communication among netizen all over the world, the translation of these Internetcatchwords is very important. The translation of Internet catchwords can enrichChinese and English languages as well as promote the communication between thetwo cultures.
