1.2 Task description

Tmxmall was founded in 2014 and is one of the earliest companies that focus on text alignment, and TB and TM management and share. On February 10, 2020, after localizing its platform, YiCAT, the company started to recruit translators and revisers for the user guide of the localized platform in order to let foreign customers use its product without difficulties. After submitting her resume and passing the translation test, the author was selected as a reviser of the project. The team consisted of two project managers who are employees of the company, six translators and four revisers. All of the translators and revisers are students from universities at home and abroad. The project started from March 3, 2020 and ended on March 10, lasting for a week. There were about 40,000 Chinese characters in the source text in total. The tasks were assigned to translators and revisers by module, not by Chinese character. Each translator was required to translate at least 850 characters a day, and each reviewer needed to check at least 2,250 characters per day. Termbase and translation memory were provided. The translation and revision were carried out at the same time. According to what proposed by Newmark[18], the text type of YiCAT User Guide is vocative text. Each sentence is an instruction. There are many icons and pictures inserted in the text, and imperative sentences are frequently used. The names of web pages, buttons and labels also appeared in bulk in the source text. The author’s task was to revise the translation of 24 modules, including Start, My Tasks and Tasks Completed, Dashboard, Quality Assurance, etc. about 10,800 Chinese characters in total. During revision, the author used YiCAT and youdao dictionary, and took English instructions of other website as references. On March 10, the translation was handed to the project managers on time. On March 20, the work finally came into use. The translated user guide is for YiCAT customers.

2 Guiding theories

2.1 English terminology of revision activities

There is no universally recognized terminology of revision activities in language service industry. In his book Revising and Editing for Translators, Mossop[19] describes several revision activities. Although revising and editing can be defined as reading any existing wording and deciding whether to make changes, there are still differences between them.
