Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Narrow Reading

This part mainly introduces the definition of narrow reading ,as well as the advantages ofnarrow reading.

2.1.1 The Concept of Narrow Reading

Narrow reading is a reading method for learners to improve their reading ability byreading multiple works of the same genre, style, subject and author. Krashen (1981) proposedthe learning strategy of narrow reading and pointed out that it is more effective in secondlanguage acquisition. The narrow reading is based on the idea that both structure andvocabulary acquisition come from extensive exposure in understandable contexts. That is tosay, when we understand information or some encoded information, we acquire newstructures and vocabulary. Krashen summarized the teaching process of narrow readingstrategy as follows: First, writers have their own language habits and unique writing styles.Each topic has the same or similar vocabulary and text structure, and narrow reading providesthe reader with a built-in review; Secondly, the narrow reading provides readers with morebackground knowledge on the topic and helps learners to use their accumulated backgroundknowledge to read books on the topic they are interested in. The more you read in a topic, themore you learn about that topic. Anson Yang (2001), the example could be called the “the firstfew pages”effect. That is to say, when reading a foreign language book, you will find that themost difficult is in the first few pages, and once this obstacle is overcome, the rest of the bookwill be much easier to read. As a result, reading articles on different topics or in differenttypes will not help readers overcome obstacles, but will only make them more confused.When the reader reads, it is obvious that these difficulties greatly hinder the reading speed andinterest to some extent, and ultimately lead to the failure of reading smoothly.

2.2 Previous Studies on Narrow Reading

As an effective reading method, many scholars and experts at home and abroad haveactively carried out research on the application of narrow reading in English teaching.

2.2.1 Relative Studies Abroad

Narrow reading is a new theory in the field of English teaching. It differs from thenotions of intensive reading and extensive reading. Intensive reading involves in the perusal reading of an article carefully, while extensive reading connects closely to the reading ofplenty various types of articles quickly. In recent years, many researchers have madetheoretical and empirical studies on narrow reading. The followings are the fulfillmenttheoretical study of narrow reading:

In foreign countries, linguist Stephen Krashen (1981) first put forward the concept ofnarrow reading (also called narrow reading ). This reflects Krashen's leadership in secondlanguage acquisition, which has brought great inspiration to language teaching abroad andlaid a solid foundation for future research.
