Chapter 5 Conclusions

5.1 Major Findings of Study

After 16 weeks of teaching practice and analyzing the data before and after theexperiment, the author found that the reading status of the students in the experimental classhas developed significantly. Reading fear has been distinctly decreased. And also students inthe experimental class has built reading confidence and their reading strategies and readingachievements are advancing. Therefore, we believe that it is effective and feasible to applynarrow reading to English reading teaching in senior high school. Through questionnaire,pretest, post-test and interview, the following conclusions can be drawn:

Narrow reading can overcome students' fear of difficulties and generate learningconfidence. In the traditional reading teaching, the teacher often transform the teachingtopic,with the unfamiliar vocabulary and background knowledge that will cause thedepression and anxiety in the mind. However, the recurring words in narrow reading wouldhave students easily master vocabulary in text. And as the gradual growth of backgroundknowledge during reading. And as the accumulation of background knowledge in the processof reading could make students more readily understand the articles related to this topic.When the students' vocabulary and background knowledge reach a certain level, they willclean away the obstacles in the future reading, so as to overcome their fear of difficulties andgenerate learning motivation.

Narrow reading can achieve a positive learning attitude, develop good reading habits andimprove reading achievement.After 16 weeks of narrow reading training, the students in theexperimental class have mastered the basic narrow reading method. In the process of reading,teachers should let students get relevant information as much as possible throughbrainstorming on a given topic and form a certain schema in their mind. Then, in the relevantreading training, students can apply the reading strategies, with the familiar vocabulary andbackground knowledge,in which they can achieve a good reading effect. Finally, throughrepeated reading training, students can form good reading habits, from narrow to broad, so asto strengthen their reading achievements.
