In 1998, a web site called the flash empire set up. Almost all the flash make in china logged in its bbs and discuss the technology problems. The owner of it got a domain name flashempire.com. The web site set up formally on 9th October 1999, although some people logged in its independent bbs on 15th September. Many Chinese flashers consider it the birthday of Chinese Flash industry. Shortly after that, more and more flash-based web sites were set up. 8th November 1999, flashempire.com set up the China Flash Ring to link all the flash web site in China.
In 21st November 1999, flashempire.com opened its top 40 flash chart, which became the authoritative review of Chinese flash works. In only one year, 533 flash works have been put in the top chart. III. Case Studies.
Why flash films in China can be considered as subversive media? The answer should be found among those flash works. What are they against/for? What do they subvert? Here are some examples:
Case I. R 'n' R @ New March
This film is based on a very popular Chinese rock and roll song in 1980s, which in fact is one of the first rock and roll in China. As many rock and roll, the song itself is full of subversive spirit. The lyric of the song is a paraphrase of some very famous political slogans in China, and that's why the song was banned for several years after its debutante. The author of the flash film chooses such a song, as his first MTV work is a subversive behaviour. Not longer than the appearance of this flash film in cyber world, this flash film got the top 10 in the top chart for flash film. The author won fame for this work, some body even consider this work as a masterpiece of Chinese flash film. At least, it's a milestone of Chinese flash film: it's the first flash film won national wide fame and it's the debut of flash film as a subversive media.
This work can be interpret ate in two different layers. As the author's official comment is "the irony on the Chinese IT industry". The symbol of "@" in the title of this flash film, the word like B2B, B2C (two types of e-business), NASDAQ appeared in the film, all these can be considered as a ironic criticise on the development of Chinese IT industry.
However, some pastiche of Chinese political culture appeared in the film, all these offer an unconscious offence to the political authority. A careful audience will notice that in the scene of the parade of farmers, worker and white-collar businessman, everybody looks alike. In a post-modern society, everybody becomes a part of mass products. Everybody lost his/her particular character. Another political metaphor used in the film is also a good example of the submersion of orthodox ideology: the word of "long march " has been a special tern refers to the red army's 10-thousand-mile march. This word has been used to describe the "socialism construction". In fact, in this film the destination of such a march becomes making more money. Another frequently appeared symbol in the film is the compass---- an invention that made Chinese people pride for several century. It's also a symbol of losing direction---- in the forest of modern life.
Some more typical and offensive example can be easily found in this film. The symbol the revolutionary---- the picture of Mao (the f
