Since thesystemic functional grammar pays much attention to the social environment of language, ittakes language system as a meaning potential. The systemic functional grammar is theoreticaland practical, although the concepts of it are very abstract, this theory is widely used in somefields of society, such as language teaching, discourse analysis, stylistics and machinetranslation.Systemic functional grammar is consisted of systemic grammar and functional grammar.They are two indispensable parts of this language system. Systemic grammar thinks languageis a system network composed by a certain number of subsystems, this is also known asmeaning potential. In systemic grammar, the concept of system is built by a basic explanatoryprinciple, that is, the whole language system can be considered as ‘system of systems’.In view of Halliday, language is the product of social activities, so he attaches muchimportance to the function of language. Functional grammar explains the construction oflanguage and the social activities we can achieve through use of language. In a sense, it is inaccordance with discourse analysis. The functional grammar can be widely used to analyzemany different genres. So, it is very practical and accepted by many scholars and researchers,and is proved to be effective for discourse analysis.

2.2 Halliday’s interpersonal model
Halliday (1994: xix) claims that there is no explicit boundary between semantics andgrammar, and he considers mood, modality and key as the main means realizing interpersonalmeaning. Still we know there are other linguistic resources that can serve as the realization ofinterpersonal meaning. Tannen thinks that details in the conversation can make readers getinvolved in interpersonal function (in Downing 1992). Liu Shisheng finds that in Dubliners, aclutch of short stories by James Joyce, interpersonal meaning is realized through adverbial andadverbial group, prepositional group, adverbial clause, noun group, verb group, adjective groupand some fixed phrases ( Liu 1997: 202). Besides, J.R. Martin points out that lexis, rhythm andintonation are also the linguistic methods of realizing interpersonal meaning (Quoted from LiZhanzi, 2002:62).Halliday (1994), explains his model of interpersonal meta-function in An Introduction toFunctional Grammar, in Chapter 4 “Clause as exchange”, he claims that the ultimate purposeof conversation is ether to exchange goods and services or to exchange information; so themood system that expressed by declarative, imperative, etc, combined with modality, whichexpresses the possibilities between positive and negative polarity, are regarded as the mainlanguage resources to arouse interpersonal meaning. According to Halliday and Simon Dik’s(1997) definition of interpersonal meaning, we can discuss it from two aspects: interactionaland attitudinal.
