摘要:Study on the function of language can be traced back to the fifth century BC, Protagorasand Plato have made a research on the relationship between semantics and rhetoric function.From the view of modern linguistics, the concept of function is first put forward byMalinowski and Mathesius from Prague School.
Chapter Four Analysis and Discussion
4.1 Overview
In this part, I analyze the five business speeches through mood, modality and evaluation.In mood system, mood types and person system are taken into consideration. Mood types arethe realization of four speech functions, they reflect the purposes of addresser: offering,commanding, making a statement or asking a question. Later, how the person system shows thespeech role in the business speeches will be discussed. The uses of different personal pronounsin business speeches identify the status and position of addresser and addressee. In modality,modalization and modulation are examined in the business speeches. And modal auxiliaries areespecially essential in the modality system. At last, appraisal theory, made up of attitude,engagement and graduation are applied into the discourse analysis.

Conclusion
Business presentation is indispensable to international and domestic trade. The speakerdelivers the speech to reach his goal intended: enlarging the knowledge of audience or helpingthem acquire some kind of skill; changing the addressees’ feelings, activities and thoughts; orextending welcome or expressing thanks on important occasions. These purposes are realizedamong the words and between the lines that embodies interpersonal meaning. The analysis ofbusiness presentation is based on Halliday’s interpersonal function and Martin’s appraisaltheory. The five samples of business presentations are from one book that is a collection ofbusiness presentations delivered by business elites. This thesis mainly studies the linguisticdevices realizing interpersonal meaning and how they carry out interpersonal meaning from theaspects of mood, modality and evaluation theory in business presentation. The thesis adoptsboth qualitative and quantitative methods, and the stylistic features of business presentation arealso taken into account.
