Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background 
Since  the  21st  century,  with  more  frequent  exchange  of  information,  means  of communication and media are becoming increasingly diversified. The information age is  coming.  It  provides  Chinese  people  with  convenience  to  get  fresh  and  new information  and  cultures  from  other  countries.  “Globally,  this  is  the  age  of  mass communications, of multimedia experiences and a world where audiences demand the right  to  share  the  latest  text,  be  it  film,  song,  or  book  simultaneously  across cultures”(Szarkowska, 2005:48). From the remarks, we can see that global demands for  communications  are  even  more  important.  At  the  same  time,  science  and technology have been developing rapidly; cross-cultural communication is becoming increasingly  and  unprecedentedly  important.  Films  in  cultural  level  between  nations played a vital role. Especially in recent years, the British and American dramas have become  very  popular  in  our  country,  attracting  a  large  number  of  Chinese  fans. Obviously,  it  has  become  a  cultural  phenomenon  that  can  not  be  ignored.  Enjoy foreign film and television works in spare time, is not only an integral part of the daily life of leisure and entertainment, but also an important channel to know about western society  and  culture.  Television  series,  as  a  kind  of  popular  entertainment,  is  a “reflector”  of  the  culture  of  its  society.  However,  such  a  large  influx  of  films  and television works, relying on traditional translation means of several domestic dubbed factories,  undoubtedly  far  unable  to  meet  the  needs  of  the  audience.  Thus,  subtitle translation become increasingly popular and important. It meets people’s needs to get over the barriers of linguistic and cultural problems during the process of appreciating foreign film and television works. Extended beyond the field of art, television series of  abroad  has  become  a  part  of  people’s  lives  and  exerted  strong  influence  on  the formation  of  people’s  language,  living  patterns  and  even  values  (Chen  Xiaoyun, 1994:82-86). Nowadays, subtitle translation is obviously one of the commonest forms of translation that people usually encounter in their everyday life in modern society.
