Chapter Two“Can China Maintain a Moderate Economic Growth in 2020?”Case Description

2.1 Mock conference background

As an MTI student I had the opportunity to attend the mock conference organized by ourfaculty on the 30thof April 2020. The mock conference was held online, on the Zoom platform,having Lian Ping’s speech as the main material for interpreting. The presentation called 《2020年中国经济能否实现中速增长》 Can China maintain a moderate economic growth in 2020?discussed the issue of Chinese economic growth under the situation of the Coronaviruspandemic, and its prospects for the year 2020. The mock conference lasted for approximately50 minutes (including the speech and the interpretation), students being required to doconsecutive interpreting.

Lian Ping is the Chief Economist of China’s Bank of Communications, the Director of theChina Banking Association’s Industry Development Research Committee, the President ofChina Chief Economist Forum and one of the founders of China Financial Forum. Mr. Lian’sprimary research interests concern macroeconomics, foreign exchange and rate policies, andmanagement of commercial banks.

His speech gave an overview of the global economic situation at the beginning of the yearduring the Coronavirus pandemic, discussing the situation of China, the United States and otherseverely affected countries, while also underlining some prospects for the development of theglobal economy in the next period of time. He also focused on the domestic demand in Chinain the context of the Covid19 outbreak, giving a brief description of the situation of exports aswell. Last, but not least he approached the Chinese governmental policies from amacroeconomic perspective, discussing their implementation and possible outcomes.

2.2 Mock conference preparation

This mock conference was held under special circumstances, since the educational systemadopted online teaching as a way of controlling the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. OurFaculty organized an online mock conference to help students engage in proper preparation for the final thesis, while also gaining experience for future interpretations. The mock conferencewas organized on the Zoom platform, which we used since the beginning of the semester. Still,we needed to run several tests to ensure a proper functionality of the platform.

While holding the online conference tests, we also made use of our personal smartphones,and through Wechat calls we were able to listen to our colleagues’ interpretation and providerelevant comments. Besides interpreting per se, the most difficult part was handling thetechnical details as well. While being in the conference we had to make sure our microphonedoes not disturb other students, so when we started interpreting, we had to mute ourselves. Thisis why we needed to engage in Wechat calls, so that our partners could be able to listen to ourinterpretation without creating disturbances on the Zoom platform.
