Of all the language learning skills, listening is commonly regarded as the most challengingone, because it requires a lot of time and practice. According to Gilakjani (2016:1670), listeningis very important in foreign language learning because the key to learn a language is to receivelanguage input. Listening comprehension is actually the process of understanding the speechautomatically and in real time, which is essential for interpreters.
To guarantee a correct understanding of the speech during consecutive interpreting,practitioners must train their listening skills beforehand. Practice is essential because all theinformation acquired is then stored inside our brain and can be accessed easily in the momentof listening, thus facilitating the comprehension. By respecting these process of acquiringlistening skills, the linguistic information contained in the listening material interacts with thepragmatic information derived from the communicative situation and the listener’s priorknowledge (the constant prior practice), in order to build a mental model or representation ofthe idea (Buck, 2001:45).
As mentioned before, this is not something that can be acquired on spot, instead, it needstremendous amount of preparation and practice. Cambridge Assessment (2018) provides fourdaily tasks that can help improve our listening skills:
1.Timetable regular practice: By maintaining a timetable regular practice, we can train ourbrain to create better responses while listening, being able to increase focus and the ability tograsp the information. Constant practice is the key to consolidating information inside ourbrains.
