ous belief.Those in power in theTheocratic Republic of Gilead were fundamentalist Protestant Christians.They believedthat the most fundamental aspect of Christianity was to regard every word of the Bible asabsolutely true,to advocate that everything written in the Bible came from God,and toread the Bible literally.In the state’s early years,Gilead carried out massive sectarian raids to eliminate the dissidents before subduing the masses.Catholics and Jews who refused toconvert were often seen on the walls for public viewing.After the Purge,fundamentalistsbegan to target women who were Christian but divorced or had abortions,and even doctorswho performed abortions on women,which Gilead saw as a drawing of a human fetus.

Chapter Two The Subject’s Plight under DisciplinaryPower

2.1 The Operation of the Disciplinary Power of TheRepublic of Gilead

The Republic of Gilead could not be ruled without the operation of power-“discipline”.“Discipline”has two primary meanings:firstly,it“gives the association anddeterrence of punitive and coercive behavior to make a docile person,like disciplining adisobedient child”(Danaher,2002:123).Secondly,it can be“used to assign and classifyindividuals,to fix them spatially,to extract their maximum time and energy,to train theirbodies,to encode their continuous behavior,to keep them in the desired visibility,tosurround them with surveillance mechanisms,to register them,to construct a cumulative,centralized set of knowledge among them”(Rizzell,2003:79).Foucault argues that“thesuccess of disciplinary power owes to the use of simple strategies:the combination of hierarchical observation,normalizing judgment,and a process specific to that power---examination”(Foucault,2017:209).This section will analyze how the power disciplines byusing hierarchical observation,normalizing judgment,and examination to shape a Panopticsociety,the Gilead,so that the Gilead population becomes more submissive and morefunctional simultaneously.

Foucault believes that“The exercise of discipline presupposes a mechanism thatcoerces through observation;an apparatus in which the techniques that make it possible toinduce effects of power,and in which,conversely,the means of coercion make those onwhom they are applied visible.”(Foucault,1995:194)The surveillance stations of theclassical era are representative of such mechanisms,the more ideal models of which arethe military barracks and the schools.In order to implement discipline in these mechanisms,the spatial distribution of people and layered,continuous and tangible supervision areessential.“The power in the hierarchical surveillance of the disciplines is not possessed asa thing,or transferred as a property;it functions like a piece of machinery”(Foucault,1995:238).Discipline enables the operation of a self-sustaining relational power that is,therefore,hidden and undetectable,in which the subject is unwittingly transformed and optimized.

2.2 The Subjects’New Docile Images
