2.2.1 Power Puppet:Aunt Lydia

Lydia is the most contradictory character in the entire novel. In The Handmaid’s Tale, she is the ruler of a female sphere, acting as a signal of punishment, always ready to teachindividuals who have transgressed the rules. The power she represents and the beliefs shepreaches stand in the hearts of all people,as the statue Gilead has built for her.She defendswith her steel whip the rules she created and supervises the Handmaids in their mission assacred vessels. She has become swollen with true power but also nebulous withit—formless,shape-shifting.She is everywhere and nowhere.Nevertheless, the sequel,TheTestaments, published 30 years later, reveals what happened to Lydia,a victim. She is apuppet of disciplinary power.

Chapter Three The Reconstruction of Self-Subject

3.1 Handmaid Offred:Through Recalling and Telling

According to Atwood’s description in the final chapter-Historial Notes,TheHandmaid’s Tale was transcribed into the text from a videotape discovered by chance bysome researchers interested in Gilead. Therefore, the narrator,Offred, brings to life whathappened in Gilead through recollection and narration.According to the Platonists,to know oneself is to grasp one’s true identity and to recognize one’s true nature in one’smind;the only bridge between caring for oneself and knowing oneself is“recollection”.Only through recollection can the self truly grasp what one sees in oneself.Therefore,Foucault(2005)believes that the Platonists treat“recollection”as the point of convergenceand the key to the movement of the mind,to knowing oneself,to caring for oneself, toknowing the truth, and to returning to one’s essence.

The first half of The Handmaid’s Tale contains a lot of Offred’s memories of lifebefore Gilead.Sidewalks would remind her of the running shoes she once owned,“withcushioned soles and breathing holes, and stars of fluorescent fabric that reflected light inthe darkness”(Atwood,2010:38).Shorts,jeans,sweatpants,all of which she earnedherself, and she missed being the owner of them. However,in the present, she wore theever-present red habit, walking in pairs with another Handmaid on the prescribed route.Even though the former places of entertainment had been outlawed, she still rememberedhow they were.

Conclusion

Based on the Bible,The Handmaid’s Tale and its sequel portray the secular GileadRepublic, whose establishment, operation and destruction highlight Atwood’s reflectionson power politics and the subject’s construction.

The first chapter of the thesis focuses on how power constructs the subject through theoperation of knowledge discours论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
