The translation source text of this report is selected from the novel The Man in the Blue Robe by the famous writer Chen Zhongshi. The Man in the Blue Robe as a Chinese contemporary literature was created in early 1986. During this period, the writer’s artistic exploration and creative thought were very active and mature. The novel narrates the ups and downs in the life and fate of a young private school gentleman. He obeys his father’s arrangements in everything he promises. Under his father’s arrangement, he begins to teach in a private school. He has become a teacher in the new era due to the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. Wrapped in a political vortex, it concentrates on the fate and misfortune of this character in his life, a life story full of grief and infinite sadness. 

Chapter II Translation Process

2.1 Pre-translation Preparation

For a translation task, adequate preparation is essential and crucial. In order to improve the quality of translation, the author has collected more information about Chen Zhongshi and the novel The Man in the Blue Robe, analyzed the source text, read relevant book reviews, selected translation theories and prepared translation tools. 

In the first place, the author focused on searching and collecting the original writer’s information and understanding his writing style. Book reviews about The Man in the Blue Robe were also very helpful for the author to further understand the novel’s contents. Through repeatedly reading the chosen four chapters, the author attempts to comprehensively understand the main idea, emotional tone, unique language features, and expression style of the novel, paving the way for the next stage of translation. 

In the second place, good translation practice should be guided by appropriate theories. The author read some professional books on translation, such as, Advanced Literary Translation of Hu Xianyao and Li Li and Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese of Lian Shuneng to understand some translation principles and translation methods of novel translation and the differences between English and Chinese. Moreover, the author read and learned some translations of Chen Zhongshi’s novels, such as Trial translation of Bailu Yuan of Yang Xiaoming and A Report on the Chinese-English Translation of Simeizi (Excerpt) under the Guidance of Literary Stylistics (Tuo, 2020) to get more useful translation skills from some similar type of translation texts. The author also downloaded many papers from CNKI about novel translation, culture-loaded words translation, idiom translation, sentence patterns of classical Chinese and serial-verb sentences to learn and master more relevant translation techniques.

2.2 While-translation Process 

In this stage, culture-loaded words, sentence patterns of classical Chinese and serial-verb sentences with logical relations, dialogues and symbolic rhetoric will become the focus and difficulty of the analysis.
