4.1 Translation at the Lexical Level
Language is the carrier of culture. When a language is translated, the culture it takes is also conveyed. The source text, an informative text focusing on Chinese history, contains a lot of culture-loaded words and polysemes, which makes it difficult to translate. To translate an informative text, according to Reiss, we should manage to convey the concept and information accurately so that the readers can receive what the original writer wants to convey.
4.1.1 Translation of Culture-loaded words
Culture-loaded words refer to the words, phrases, and idioms that contain the unique elements of a certain culture. These words reflect the particular ways of activities that a certain nation has gradually accumulated in the long historical process, which are distinctive from other nations’ (Liao Qiyi, 2000). Although some of them have established translated names, which are recognized by the public, some have no equivalent in western history or terminology in western vocabulary. Considering the function of the source text, the translator believes that paraphrase can be adopted to convey the accurate meaning of these words and phrases and help to transmit Chinese culture. Therefore, the translator uses translation methods, including literal translation, transliteration plus annotation, and paraphrase, and translation techniques such as omission and conversion.
Chapter V Conclusion
5.1 Gains Under the guidance of text typology theory,the translator has completed the translation of the second and fifth chapters of The Spirit of Chinese History. According to the text typology theory, text type determines the translation methods (Liu Junping, 2009). Reiss divides text type into informative text, expressive text, and operative text on the basis of the classification of language function of K. Buhler (Zhang Meifang, 2009). For the translation of the informative text, plain prose should be used, and the language should achieve explicitation as required (Munday, 2001:74). This translation task, a history-related text aiming to spread Chinese history, gives priority to conveying the content of the text and making the translated text concise as much as possible. The translation process of the task mainly contains six difficulties, including the translation of culture-loaded words and polysemes, run-on sentences, and classical Chinese, as well as parallelism and metaphor. For different difficulties,the translator uses different translation methods and techniques.
For the translation of culture-loaded words and polysemes, accurate concepts are concerned with priority. As many have no equivalent in the target culture context, transliteration plus annotation, and paraphrase are used to achieve informative function and help target readers understand Chinese history and culture. For the translation of run-on sentences whose logic is implicit and structure is diffusive, combination, conversion of part of speech, division, and reconstruction are used to make the logic relationships explicit so that the translation is in line with the features of English.
