Chapter Ⅱ Task Description


2.1 Pre-Interpreting

Regarding pre-interpreting preparation, Su (2020) believes that an interpreter has tolisten to the original language, take notes, and then convey the speaker's meaning in thetarget language within a short period. When the speaker is a well-known scholar,pre-interpreting preparation is essential if inexperienced interpreters want to achieve betterresults in interpreting practice.

And referring to the role of pre-interpreting preparation, Claudio (2017) believes thatpreparing an assignment in advance aims at bridging the linguistic and extra-linguistic gapbetween conference participants and interpreters and at reducing the cognitive load duringinterpreting. For these reasons it is considered crucial in ensuring higher interpretingquality.

In terms of the specific corpus, this process specifically includes familiarity with theonline conference format and framework, background knowledge base and terminologyprediction, and contingency planning.

2.1.1 Familiarity with online conference formats and frameworks

With the rapid development of modern technology and the increasing demand forconference interpreting, online conference interpreting has come into being and changedthe way interpreters work. 'Online conference interpreting as technological advancementhas its development prospects, which can solve problems such as time or distance, and alsodepends on the improvement of the adaptability of interpreters and the continuousadvancement of technology (Xu, 2020).'

2.2 Interpreting

2.2.1 Applicability of interpreting strategies in practice

Based on the nature of the online conference, the authors combined the interpretivetheory and Gill's the Effort Model to develop the interpreting strategies used in thissimulated consecutive interpreting process.

Xie (2020) divided the process of consecutive interpreting into two parts by theinterpretive theory: understanding, detaching from the linguistic shell of the originallanguage and re-presenting, which can be used to distinguish non-linguistic meaning fromlinguistic meaning.

This is because the interpretive theory emphasizes the need to convey not only thelinguistic meaning of linguistic symbols but also their non-linguistic meaning. Therefore,in the process of practice, the author adopts the interpretive theory of the conversionmethod by using various conversion methods such as sentence component conversion,sequence conversion, and expression conversion in the process of practice, the interpretingis made more in line with the expression of the target language and the expression habits ofthe audience.

Another translation theory that runs throughout the practice of interpreting is Gill'sEffort Model, which states that the author must allocate the processing capacity to ensurethat the total amount of processing capacity required in the process is equal to or less thanthe total amount of processing capacity provided by the author's energy for the author toperform smoothly.
