s(PB)domain talks in VOICE 3.0,thethree types of mitigation classified by Caffi are found,namely bushes(8.78%),hedges(18.82%)and shields(72.40%).We can see that mitigation is very common inthis context,in which bushes are used more frequently,and hedges and shields areused less frequently.As far as bushes are concerned,there are two sub-types found inthis corpus,which are ordered from the most to the least frequent:fuzzy terms(90.44%),negative opposite(9.56%),these kinds of bushes mainly used for semanticfuzziness of proposition;In terms of hedges,there are two sub-types found in thiscorpus:downgrader(91.64%)and consultative device(8.36%),and they are used toreduce the commitment to truth;As far as shields are concerned,five sub-types appearin this corpus:modal devices(55.89%),perfective aspect(20.24%),first-person plural(18.50%),quotational shields(3.82%)and strategic digressions(1.55%),and they areused to shift the speaker’s responsibility for the utterance.Therefore,participants aremore inclined to use fuzzy terms,downgrader,first-person plural,perfective aspectand modal devices to achieve specific business communication purposes.As a kind of first-person plural,“inclusive we”was also found in Brigitte Planken(2005)’sresearch that it was used more by the majority of professional negotiators.Previousstudies have also analyzed the use of mitigation for a certain speech act.Throughanalysing disagreement act in ELF business negotiations,Bjørge(2012)found thatthere are three types of mitigation strategies been used,namely delay,added supportand modulation/Indirectness.
