Chapter Two Difficulties and Analysis of Causes

2.1 Linguistic Obstacles

When taking up this project, the reporter ran into two major language problems. Firstof all, the reporter failed to get used to Australian accents. Moreover, unfamiliarity withcertain paper-making terminology and relevant background knowledge caused thereporter’s misinformation.

2.1.1 Australian Accents

There is no denying that the interpreter must understand what is being said beforeinterpreting for clients. However, the issue of accents can create obstacles to interpreting. In the process of negotiations between both sides, the speaker's pronunciation directlyaffects the interpreter's understanding.

Although there are no obvious regional differences between Australian English andEnglish spoken in other English-speaking countries, there are still some changes. There aremany words and idioms that are unique to Australian English. Unlike British English,Australian English is very different in each city. Both Australian and New Zealand Englishare similar to South African English, so they are often defined as 'southern-hemisphereEnglish.'

According to Venuti, ―bad pronunciation by a non-native speaker forces theinterpreter to devote much processing capacity to the Listening and Analysis Effort‖(2012:76), which means it is possible to lead to misunderstanding. It was essential todedicate a much deeper analysis, when the speaker speaking in a foreign language whomaybe naturally has a strong accent, giving rise to lexical or syntactic errors. In this project, two foreign clients from the state of Victoria, Australia, so unique accents posed a great challenge to the reporter.

2.2 Extra-linguistic Obstacles

In carrying out the project, the reporter encountered not only three major languageissues, but also two non-linguistic barriers. First of all, the reporter's attention management was not strong enough. When encountering a long conversation, he was so frightened thatthe interpretation notes were messy. Second, the reporter failed to fully understand his role.In business negotiations, the reporter needed to interpret the source language into the targetlanguage, and more importantly coordinate the negotiations between the two sides.

2.2.1 Attention Management and the Messy Notes

The terminology of the paper industry was indeed a daunting challenge for thereporter during the project. However, there were other obstacles in the consecutiveinterpretation. Especially when the reporter encountered a long conversation, the inabilityto balance short-time memory and notes led to messy notes and missed information.Besides, in business negotiations, when speakers spoke of excitement, the speed and thetime of speech also increased. As a result, he was under a lot of pressure, causing stagnantnote-taking in this process.
