3.1 Solutions to Language Obstacles

3.1.1 Getting Familiar with Australian Accents

As the process of globalization continues to evolve and China becomes more closelyconnected with the rest of the world, interpreters are likely to come into contact withforeigners with different accents. Therefore, the accents will affect the response time of theinterpreter and the accuracy of the interpretation. According to Zhang Xudong (张旭东2011), effective strategies should be adopted for efficient information processing inalternate interpretation. Reduction, induction and generalization of source languageinformation are the principles that simultaneous interpreters should attach importance to.

Mr. Wang: 可以给我们介绍一下你们公司统一纸业嘛？我们还不了解。

Reporter: Can you give a brief introduction to your company for Mr. Wang? We just have a littleknowledge of your products.

Robert: Yeah, ok. we are a recycling company. Probably we sell paper cardboard. We currently do3000 tons with the basic setup. Particularly we have trucks deliver to us. We have containers to sell ourproducts, more to Asian.

Conclusion and Recommendations

In the interpreting project on the Victorian Jiangsu Business Placement Program,which ran from May 12, 2019 to May 17, 2019, the reporter was confronted with manysevere challenges and great difficulties during the implementation of the project. Afterreflecting on his own performance and drawing on the experience of other experts, thereporter endeavored to propose corresponding interpreting strategies. Therefore, thischapter summarizes this report, including the major difficulties, cause analysis, andcorresponding solutions. At the same time, the reporter also made relevantrecommendations.

The reporter encountered two types of problems: first, language problems; second,non-language problems. The former included: lack of paper industry terminology andrelated background knowledge; obstacles to Australian accents. The latter included:psychological factors affecting interpretation notes; inability to accurately understand dualroles. Through self-assessment and expert experience, the reporter provided correspondingtranslation strategies for these issues.

The solutions fall into two categories accordingly. In terms of language, the reportermust be fully prepared before the project, including collating glossary of technical termsand understanding of relevant background knowledge; reaching out to speakers in advanceto be familiar with accents. When it comes to aspects other than language, the reportershould strive to overcome psychological pressure, balance short-time memory andinterpreting notes, and correctly understand the dual roles of the interpreter and thecoordinator.
